The Pamoja Project is a U.S. based non-profit organization that partners with organizations and individuals in HIV/AIDS ravaged northern Tanzania. We believe that by working with locally founded initiatives we can empower communities to meet the economic, social and health challenges of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
The effects of the AIDS epidemic on Tanzanian households can be very destructive. Families lose their income earners and hope for the future. Those who die of AIDS often leave behind surviving partners and children who are in need of care. Worst of all, Tanzania is home to nearly 2 million orphaned children. “If this situation is not addressed, and not addressed now with increased urgency, millions of children will continue to die, and tens of millions more will be further marginalized, stigmatized, malnourished, uneducated, and psychologically damaged.” - Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of UNICEF.
Pamoja Project’s philosophy is to help Tanzanian communities meet the challenges of the HIV/AIDS pandemic one family at a time. When a number of people living in a village become more educated about HIV prevention and begin to care for their neighbors who are ill, the whole community becomes healthier. If orphans living in one area find support through Pamoja Project sponsors, they, and their needs, are no longer invisible. And when a group of HIV positive persons receive micro-loans and begin to be productive members of their society once again, stigma is reduced. Small changes have been shown to have a big impact on the tightly-knit Tanzanian culture.
Send an orphan to school or for vocational training. Provide a microloan to help an AIDS impacted family move out of poverty. Or support our award-winning community health worker program. It’s up to you, and every dollar you send will be used for programming, not administrative costs.
Or, donate to the Director's Fund, which will be used for the program most in need.
